Timescapes
Hours. Minutes. Seconds?
Why are seconds called “seconds?”
What happened to firsts?
Maybe the person who named “seconds” was in a hurry. Clocks seem to encourage that. We have developed the ability to measure time in fractions of a second; which is an amazing feat. But just because we can travel to the moon doesn’t mean we should stay up there. And just because we can measure time with stunning precision doesn’t mean we should do so on such a regular basis.
In April of 2009, I removed all of the minute hands from my O-Clocks (which is the nickname for my Timescapes) and renamed the second hands the “first hands.” We might not be ready for the sun-dial pace of our ancestors yet, but it would help to take a step in that direction. Living with an O-Clock is just such a step.
There might be times after you look at an O-Clock when you still don’t know what time it is. And that’s ok. A realignment is underway.
Now is the time.
